Step 1
Clean off the metal with a dust cloth to prepare the metal for antiquing. If there is dust or grime on the metal, use a microfiber cloth and water to clean the aluminum.
Step 2
Make a few rub and scratch marks to imitate wear using a fine-grit sandpaper. Think of typical wear areas, such as corners and edges, and lightly rub the fine-grit sandpaper on those areas. Dust off sanded areas to remove any grit.
Step 3
Rub a thin coat of olive or linseed oil onto the aluminum using latex gloves. Lightly go over the entirety of the metal with a piece of fine steel wool and smooth out the scratches made by the sandpaper. Wipe off all of the oil using a microfiber cloth or towel.
Step 4
Coat the aluminum with a thick layer of clear car wax. Attach a brass brush bit to a power drill and go over the entire surface of the aluminum. Varying pressure will result in areas of the metal looking brighter or darker than others.
Step 5
Remove the wax with a microfiber cloth. Rub some areas more than others to give those areas a brighter sheen. Evaluate the aluminum and decide if the look you achieved is exactly what you want. Repeat any of the steps as preferred to get that perfect antiqued patina.

Step 1
Slide on a pair or leather work gloves, safety glasses and a dust mask to protect your skin, eyes and lungs.
VIDEO OF THE DAY
Step 2
Place your aluminum sheet onto a work surface. Fit an appropriate tip -- between size "000" or "2" -- to an oxy-acetylene torch. Ignite the torch.
Step 3
Heat up a quarter-sized spot on the aluminum sheet. Hold the torch flame just off the surface for 30 seconds. Turn off the torch.
Step 4
Touch the tip of a prefabricated 550-degree crayon to the hot spot at a 45-degree angle. Hold it for 10 seconds. Repeat steps 4 and 5 as often as necessary until the crayon turns orange. The 550-degree prefabricated crayon is designed to specifically correspond with the shrink temperature of aluminum. While not 550 degrees itself, the crayon will change colors once the tip reaches 550 degrees.
Step 5
Hammer the aluminum with short, rapid strokes around the hot spot as soon as the shrink temperature is reached. Continue for 15 to 30 seconds. Avoid striking the hot spot directly to prevent additional thinning.

Advantages of Steel Railing
Today, what we call "wrought iron" or "iron" railings are actually steel. They were once made of iron, but improved processing produced the steel that is used in all types of railings today. Steel is very malleable, meaning it can be worked in many ways to produce the same look as the antiques railings seen on old buildings. Steel railings are strong, durable and will last for many years. Steel can be bent, cast and shaped into an infinite variety of designs that can allow homeowners to express their individuality and provide the perfect design for their homes. Steel holds paint well and can be finished in any color. The installation of steel railings is easy to do, and they will hold strongly and solidly for decades.
Disadvantages of Steel Railings
Unfortunately, iron railings and today's steel railings, can rust. This occurs when moisture reacts chemically with the iron in the steel. It creates another compound called iron oxide, which is much weaker than the original material, according to ScienceBuddies. This can cause cracks, holes and crevices in the steel. If not repaired, the rust can continue throughout the material causing breakage. This chemical process accelerates in conditions like acid rain. Though manufacturers use a number of coatings to inhibit the rusting process, if these coating are damaged in any way, the material will begin to rust.
Advantages of Aluminum Railings
Aluminum is malleable like steel and can be worker into many different railing designs to suit any purpose. Aluminum has clean, sleak look that enhances the appearance of modern residential structures. It will not rust as steel does, which makes it a good choice for homes in moist environments. Aluminum railings can be powder coated in any number of modern colors. Aluminum is lighter in weight than iron, and so is easier to install in difficult areas.
Disadvantages of Aluminum Railings
Aluminum is not as strong as iron or steel, according to VikingFence&Deck. It will bend if a large amount of pressure is put on it. Though aluminum railings do not rust like iron, they can develop a slightly whitish coating in areas where moisture penetrates the coating.

| How to Oxidize Aluminum |
|
Posted by: ZellaHyday - 12-31-2021, 09:08 AM - Forum: aluminium faq

Aluminum has a high strength-to-weight ratio, and its patina is the same color as the metal. Therefore, many industries use aluminum, in place of steel or plastic, for strong, lightweight parts that resist corrosion. However, the aluminum surface does oxidize, and oxidation weakens the metal. Scratching and incising the softened, oxidized layer creates undulation in the patina, but the surface color will not vary, unless you rub pigment over the incisions. Aluminum oxidation hastens with an abundance of ions washed over the aluminum surface.
Step 1
Mix equal parts salt and water to create a saline slurry. The water partially dissolves the salt, allowing the slurry to stick to the aluminum.
VIDEO OF THE DAY
Step 2
Rub the slurry over the aluminum surface and allow it to set for one week.
Step 3
Clean the aluminum surface with water and a wire brush. Remove all of the crusted salt.
Step 4
Rub the slurry over the aluminum surface again. Do not disturb the surface for one additional week.
Step 5
Rinse the aluminum surface with water to dissolve the remaining salt. Allow the aluminum to dry. A patina, from oxidation, will have formed on the aluminum surface, although there will not be a change in the color or finish of the surface.
Tip
This method of oxidizing aluminum is not the same as anodizing aluminum. Anodizing is a process of artificial oxidation using an acid and electricity to create a strong surface on the metal. Dye can be added to the acid to change the surface color of anodized aluminum. Anodizing is dangerous, because of the introduction of acid and electricity.

| How to Make a Boat Out of Aluminium Foil That Can Hold Pennies |
|
Posted by: ZellaHyday - 12-31-2021, 09:04 AM - Forum: aluminium faq
- No Replies
|
 |
Step 1
Cut a sheet of aluminum foil into a rectangle using scissors to measure 8 inches long by 6 inches wide. Place the rectangle vertically in front of you on a flat surface.
Step 2
Fold the top two corners over by 3 inches, touching the top edges together. Press the folds flat with your hand.
Step 3
Fold the bottom two corners up by 3 inches, touching the bottom edges together. Press the folds flat with your hand.
Step 4
Apply waterproof tacky glue onto the surface of the top folded ends, then press them together. Repeat to glue together the bottom folds. Allow the glue to dry for 30 minutes. This will create a boat form from the aluminum foil.
Step 5
Press your fingers into the boat form, and flatten the bottom of the boat into a rectangular form. This will stabilize the boat, enabling it to hold objects while staying afloat in the water.

| How To Bend A Round Bar |
|
Posted by: ZellaHyday - 12-31-2021, 09:02 AM - Forum: aluminium faq
- No Replies
|
 |
Step 1
Position the aluminum Bar in a tabletop vise with the section of rod that you're planning to bend positioned slightly higher than the vise jaws so that you can make the bend without creasing the top of the bend arc with the vise edge. Tighten the vise securely so that the rod does not move at all. Test the Bar for movement before beginning the bending process.
Step 2
Make sure that the valves on the oxygen and acetylene tanks are in the off position. Connect the head of the acetylene torch to the tanks using the torch hoses. When using the torch, wear protective gear, including welding gloves, welding helmet and leather apron.
Step 3
Start the flow of acetylene by turning the valve to the tank about one-half of a full turn. Light the gas with the striker to produce an orange-red flame.
Step 4
Run the flame over the area of the rod you intend to bend until the area develops a layer of black soot. Remove the flame from the bar, and add oxygen to the torch flame by turning the valve on the oxygen tank slowly until the flame turns blue.
Step 5
Run the flame over the soot-covered area until the soot disappears, burning off with the flame's heat. Remove the flame from the area, then turn off the torch by closing the oxygen valve completely and then closing the acetylene valve.
Step 6
Place a piece of barstock, another aluminum or other metal Bar at least as strong as aluminum, about the same curvature of the bend you wish to create against the aluminum bending point, and clamp it into place. You can purchase barstock from a hardware or home improvement store. Grab the end of the rod while you are still wearing the welding gloves, and bend the aluminum over the bar stock until you've created the curve you wish. In order to bend the aluminum at an angle, simply bend it over the vise edge without the curved stock in place. Allow the rod to cool before use.

We all know that the quality of aluminium is very light and its corrosion resistance is much stronger than that of other metals, which are also the most remarkable characteristics of aluminium discs. It is precisely because of its low density and light weight that it is widely used in aviation, automobile, ship and other transportation manufacturing industries. In addition, a large number of aluminum discs, aluminum metals and aluminium alloys are also used in advanced industries such as spacecraft and artificial satellites.
Secondly, it has very good conductivity. Its conductivity is weaker than that of copper, but because of its large reserves and low density, it is only one third of that of copper, so the quality of aluminium is only half of that of copper for conveying the same amount of electricity. In addition, aluminium oxide film not only has the ability of corrosion resistance, but also has a certain degree of insulation, so aluminium disc metal has a very common use in electrical manufacturing industry, wire and cable industry and radio industry.
Aluminum discs and aluminium alloys are often used as forgings in industry. They can be cast in various shapes and types of forgings. They can be joined by various methods, including welding, resistance welding, bonding, riveting and bolting. In addition, thermite is often used to melt refractory metals and weld rails. It can also be used as deoxidizer in steelmaking process.
These are some of the characteristics of aluminium, and these characteristics also determine that aluminium can be widely used.
