What is a low aluminium threshold? |

You may of heard the term "low threshold" but not know exactly what it is and why exactly you would need one, and if this is the case please read on. This is an option you’ll need to take into account if your in the market for a new front or back door as it relates to the step at the bottom of the door. The threshold itself is the part of the door that separates the outside from the inside, so when entering you would "cross the threshold"
Why you might need a low threshold
There are many reasons why this is an essential option such as; wheel-chair access, the elderly and those with mobility problems, as well as making it easier for getting a pram in or out and for young toddlers. And of course anyone who would prefer not having a step on the way in, or an extra obstacle to trip over!
The technical on thresholds
For example a standard a upvc, composite, or french door would have a upvc threshold and this would typically be a step of around 70mm. This is simply the bottom piece of a four sided frame, so the frame would be exactly the same on the bottom as it is on the top and sides.
So with a low threshold the bottom piece of frame would be reduced in order to lower the step into your home, tyipically with an aluminium strip, which would be around 12mm in height. This option is available with the majority of external doors including upvc doors and composite doors, as well as aluminium and upvc french and bifold doors. However with sliding patio doors the operation is different, and the options more limited because of the sliding roller mechanism within the frame, however that's not to say a low threshold can't still be achieved.
Your probably thinking "why wouldn't I want this option" well there is one another thing to take into account and unfortunately, it is a (small) down side to the option! For example a low threshold fitted to a composite front door would (but only slightly) reduce the energy efficiently. This is because, in order to make a seal against the aluminium strip there are two rubber gaskets and whilst these are 100% weather tight, there is not the same insulation properties of the standard threshold.

Why does aluminum foil block radio waves? |

Thin amounts of plastic wrap, wax paper, cotton and rubber are not likely to interfere with radio waves. However, aluminum foil, and other electrically conductive metals such as copper, can reflect and absorb the radio waves and consequently interferes with their transmissio
A cell phone, wrapped in a layer of aluminum foil, cannot receive calls. The foil, an electrical conductor, creates a barrier called a Faraday Cage around the phone, blocking the radio signals on which it operates. You can easily demonstrate this for yourself by placing a phone on a sheet of aluminum foil, folding the foil over until you completely cover the device, and then calling its number -- the phone will not ring.
Radio Waves and Fields
Radio waves, such as those used to carry cell phone signals, are an example of electromagnetic radiation, moving electric fields that travel at the speed of light. An aluminum-foil barrier cancels the fields, so a radio wave cannot pass through it. A cell phone surrounded on all sides by foil receives no radio waves.
Faraday Cage
Scientists use a structure called a Faraday Cage to provide an area free of radio signals in order to perform sensitive experiments or to test electronic equipment. The cage is simply an enclosed box made of an electrical conductor such as aluminum. The conductor's thickness has little effect on signal blocking; thin foils or heavy plates work equally well. The cage can have holes, gaps or windows, provided they are much smaller than the shortest wavelength of radio signal you want to block. The door on a microwave oven, for example, has a wire mesh; the holes in the mesh let you see inside the oven while keeping the microwaves safely inside.
Two-Way Blocking
While the Faraday Cage formed by aluminum foil surrounding a cell phone keeps signals from reaching it, it also blocks signals coming from the cell phone. If you sat inside a Faraday Cage the size of a small room with a cell phone, you would not be able to make any calls because the cell tower would not receive your signal. You could communicate with a partner using walkie-talkies inside the cage, but not to anyone outside it.
Other Conductors
Although aluminum foil is easy to obtain, you can use any good conductor to block cell phone signals. Copper and zinc are both excellent conductors that make effective Faraday Cages. Iron and steel are also good conductors; steel-framed buildings often have many cell signal dead zones because the beams form unintended Faraday Cages, blocking radio waves.

luminum Gutter Installation Steps:
Aluminum Gutter
1. Measure along the house fascia to determine the length of each piece of gutter.
2. Apply a bead of silicone sealant along the inner edge of an aluminum end cap. Tap the end cap onto the end of the gutter, then secure it with a crimping tool.
3. Cut the gutter to length using a hacksaw and tin snips.
4. Fasten pre-mitered aluminum corner to the gutter end using sealant and aluminum pop rivets.
5. Attach an end cap to the second length of gutter, then rivet it to the mitered corner to create the L-shaped gutter assembly.
6. Use a hole saw to drill a 3-inch-diameter hole through bottom of the gutter. Attach an outlet fitting to the hole using sealant and rivets.
7. Hold the L-shaped gutter assembly in place against the house fascia.
8. Use a level as a straightedge to position the high end of the gutter. Be sure the front edge of the gutter doesn’t protrude above the roof plane.
9. Slip a gutter-mounting bracket into the high-end of the gutter, then drive a screw through the bracket and fascia and into a rafter tail.
10. Adjust the pitch of the gutter so that rainwater will drain down to where the downspout will be installed.
11. Slip brackets into the gutter and drive the screws through the brackets and into the rafter tails. Place one bracket at each rafter tail.
12. Place two elbows onto the upper end of a length of downspout, and secure them with short sheet-metal screws.
13. Screw two aluminum wall brackets to the house corner boards.
14. Slip the elbow on the upper end of the downspout over the outlet fitting protruding down from the gutter above.
15. To hold the downspout in place, drive short sheet-metal screws through the wall brackets and into the downspout.
16. Dig a shallow trench from the lower end of the downspout out away from the house. 17 Use PVC primer and cement to assemble a rainwater drainpipe made from 4-inch-diameter PVC pipe and assorted fittings.
17. On one end of the drainpipe attach an elbow and rectangular downspout fitting. On the other end, glue on an elbow and drainage cap.
18. Slip the bottom end of the downspout into the rectangular downspout fitting attached to the end of the PVC drainpipe.
19. Lay the drainpipe in the trench, then backfill.

What are the pros and cons of aluminum versus stainless steel? |

Both of these metals have qualities that make them particularly desirable, but they each have their drawbacks as well.
Here are the advantages and disadvantages associated with aluminum and stainless steel.
The Weight of the Material
One of the major advantages that aluminum has over stainless steel is the fact that it is very light in weight, while steel can be quite heavy. This difference in weight is due to the fact that aluminum is less dense than stainless steel. In fact, aluminum is typically about one-third of the weight of stainless steel; this means that manufacturers prefer to use aluminum for certain items such as window frames and automobile trim, so as not to add unnecessary weight to the component.
The Difference in Strength
There is no doubt that aluminum is a durable material; however, it is not as strong as stainless steel. And while this may not be a concern in every application, those that depend on a particular level of strength should opt for stainless steel.
The reason that stainless steel is stronger than aluminum is due to its higher overall density. There are many applications, such as commercial counter tops and kitchen sinks, that must hold considerable weight, and therefore they are usually made from stainless steel rather than aluminum.
Corrosion Concerns
Both aluminum and stainless steel are noted for their anti-corrosive properties, especially when compared to other metals, but even still, stainless steel is much less susceptible to corrosion than aluminum. Erosion and corrosion are something that must be taken into consideration when using the metal outside where it will be subjected to the elements.
As the name suggests, stainless steel is specially made to prevent staining and corrosion (rust), while aluminum will tend to become clouded if it is exposed to moisture or chemicals for extended periods.
Cooking Applications
One of the foremost advantages that stainless steel has over aluminum is its ability to be used in food preparation. Stainless steel will not influence the taste or texture of food, and this is due to its neutral chemical composition.
On the other hand, aluminum can affect the way food will taste if that product comes in contact with the metal surface for an extended period. Not only this, but aluminum can change the appearance of food, and this does not bode well for restaurants and chefs.
Final Statement
As it has been shown, there are many advantages and disadvantages when it comes to using aluminum and stainless steel. For the most part, aluminum will provide a lighter weight material, which can be a considerable advantage in certain applications, such as automobile trim and engine components. And while aluminum also has anti-corrosive properties, it is still more susceptible to clouding and pitting than stainless steel.
The primary advantage that stainless steel has over aluminum is its strength. While aluminum may be less dense and lighter, steel is much stronger. Stainless steel is also better suited for cooking applications, such as counter tops and food storage containers.
In the end, both stainless steel and aluminum are versatile materials, and their pros and cons will depend on the application in which they are being used.
