What You’ll Need:
Wire brush
Something to secure your aluminium sheet, like a clamp

Start by securing your sheet in place. Test to make sure that it can’t be easily moved. You may not be able to achieve the finish you want if your sheet won’t stay still! There are plenty of tools that you can use to properly secure a metal sheet.

If you’re trying to find the right way to secure your sheet, you’ll want to look for some sort of clamp. If you have access to a standard clamp tool, you can use that. If you plan to cut the metal after the finish is applied, you could also place heavy items at the edges to secure the sheet in place.

Once you’re confident your sheet is secure, you should take your wire brush and begin to brush the sheet with it. You’ll want to keep all of your strokes straight and steady. Every stroke should be in the same direction; this will give you a more consistent finish. You should continue to brush the sheet until you’re satisfied with the finish that you’ve achieved. If possible, you may want to experiment with scrap metal before you start this process so that you can get a clearer picture of what your finish will look like.

After you’ve applied your desired finish, you’ll want to use your cloth to brush the sheet. This will help to set your finish. As you buff the sheet, you’ll notice that the finish you’ve applied is far more noticeable. You should spend at least one minute buffing your sheet to complete the process.

You can create many types of finishes using this simple method. Even though you’ll be doing everything by hand, it won’t take much time, nor will it require you to purchase expensive tools. This is the easiest way to apply a brushed finish to an aluminium sheet, and it’s also a highly effective method.

Alternatively, if you’d to create a more machined finish, you can use purchase a wire brush finish for an electric drill. The method of applying the finish will essentially be the same. Secure your sheet, move the brush across the sheet, and create the finish that you want. You can also create a similar type of finish using a belt sander. However, if you do use a tool like a belt sander, you will have to take extra precautions when securing your sheet. It will be even easier for the sheet to be moved while you apply the finish.

Because the sheet has to be firmly secured before you can apply your finish, it’s likely that the finish won’t be consistent throughout the entire sheet. You may find that the edges of the finish look different from the rest of the sheet. The best way to correct this issue is to simply cut off any edges so that you have a sheet with a consistent finish.

If you would prefer not to cut your sheet, you can try to correct any issues after the finish is applied. Secure the sheet once again, making sure that the edges are exposed. Brush these areas, using the same technique that you used when you applied the finish previously. Buff the sheet when you’re done. These results won’t be perfect, but your sheet should have a fairly consistent finish.

You can create many types of finishes by using this simple technique. If you have scrap metal sheets, you may want to experiment with them so that you can get a better sense of what different finishes would look like. You can try applying various finishes and find the perfect method before you apply a finish to your own sheet.
