The following is general information on the various aluminum alloys and grades, and their typical applications.
General Information of Aluminum Alloy sheet
Aluminum alloy sheet is a kind of industrial building materials, which can be used in various industries according to different materials. According to the surface treatment method, it can be divided into two categories: non painted products and painted products.
In general, the two broad categories of aluminum alloys are wrought alloys and casting alloys. Both of these groups are subdivided into heat-treatable and non-heat-treatable types. Around 85% of aluminum is used in wrought alloys. Cast alloys are relatively inexpensive to produce because of their low melting point, but they tend to have lower tensile strengths than their wrought counterparts.
List of Aluminum Alloy sheets:
  • 1xxx: Controlled unalloyed (pure) composition, used primarily in the electrical and chemical industries

  • 2xxx: Alloys in which copper is the principal alloying element, although other elements, notably magnesium, may be specified. 2xxxseries alloys are widely used in aircraft where their high strength (yield strengths as high as 455 MPa, or 66 ksi) is valued.

  • 3xxx: Alloys in which manganese is the principal alloying element, used as general-purpose alloys for architectural applications and various products

  • 4xxx: Alloys in which silicon is the principal alloying element, used in welding rods and brazing sheet

  • 5xxx: Alloys in which magnesium is the principal alloying element, used in boat hulls, gangplanks, and other products exposed to marine environments

  • 6xxx: Alloys in which magnesium and silicon are the principal alloying elements, commonly used for architectural extrusions and automotive components

  • 7xxx: Alloys in which zinc is the principal alloying element (although other elements, such as copper, magnesium, chromium, and zirconium, may be specified), used in aircraft structural components and other high-strength applications. The 7xxx series are the strongest aluminum alloys, with yield strengths ≥500 MPa (≥73 ksi) possible.

  • 8xxx: Alloys characterizing miscellaneous compositions. The 8xxx series alloys may contain appreciable amounts of tin, lithium, and/or iron.

  • 9xxx: Reserved for future use

Aluminium alloy 1050 is a popular grade of aluminium for general sheet metal work where moderate strength is required.Alloy 1050 is known for its excellent corrosion resistance, high ductility and highly reflective finish.
1060 aluminum alloy is another representative product in 1000 series aluminum alloys. 1060 aluminum alloy is formed by pure aluminum added by a small amount of copper element, which has excellent forming processing characteristics, high corrosion resistance, good weld ability and conductivity
Pure aluminum (.99% min.) is highly resistant to attack by chemicals and rural, industrial and marine atmospheres. Easily worked and ductile enough for deep draws. For general use in applications where the essential qualities of aluminum will be beneficial
These are high-strength, heat-treatable alloys with nearly twice the strength of 5052 and fair corrosion resistance. Alclad 2024 provides improved corrosion resistance.
Pure aluminum (.99% min.) is highly resistant to attack by chemicals and rural, industrial and marine atmospheres. Easily worked and ductile enough for deep draws. For general use in applications where the essential qualities of aluminum will be beneficial
Very similar to 3003 in physical properties and corrosion resistance though slightly lighter. Recommended for anodized applications for best match with extruded aluminum components.
A versatile alloy for applications requiring greater strength. Readily formed, very good corrosion resistance. Recommended for applications requiring high strength and formability
aluminum alloy sheet 5083 contains 5.2% magnesium, 0.1% manganese and 0.1% chromium. In the tempered condition, it is strong, and retains good formability due to excellent ductility. 5083 has high resistance to corrosion, and is used in marine applications. It has the low density and excellent thermal conductivity common to all aluminium alloys.
Recommended for welded assemblies requiring both welding efficiency and high joint strength. Good corrosion resistance. Typical applications include pressure vessels, marine super-structures and transportation equipment.
This high-strength, heat-treatable alloy provides good formability and weldability and good corrosion resistance. Suitable for a wide variety of structural and architectural applications.
Commonly known as an architectural alloy. It has reasonably high tensile properties, excellent finishing characteristics and a high degree of resistance to corrosion. Most often found in various interior and exterior architectural applications and trim. It is very well suited for anodizing applications. The Tube and Angle shapes in this grade typically have square corners.
This alloy is intended for aircraft applications requiring the highest strength. Alclad 7075 provides improved corrosion resistance.
