People used to wear tin foil hats in the belief that the hats would block alien mind control devices. Aluminum foil hats have not been shown to block mind control.
Tinfoil is made of tin. Aluminum foil is made of aluminum. Tinfoil tends to rub off on what it is wrapped around much more so than aluminum, so people who wrapped their food in tinfoil would be eating (small amounts of) tin as a result. Tin isn’t as dangerous as lead, but health concerns aside it wasn’t a pleasant taste.
Tin foil is a little stronger and less likely to tear than aluminum foil, but that rigidity isn’t nearly useful enough so to compete with the “yuck, that tastes like metal” factor at the consumer level.People used to wear tin foil hats in the belief that the hats would block alien mind control devices.
