Aluminum cases - naturally loud? - MichaelSmith - 05-23-2018 Hello, The parts for my new system came in today. One of the things I've kept from the old system was the case - an aluminum Coolermaster. Theoretically I figured the new system would be at least a little bit quieter. - The old had a 80mm heatsink fan, the new has a 120mm Nexus "ultra quiet" fan. - New hard drive is a Samsung that is supposedly one of the quiest hard drives available. Old hard drive was an IBM Deskstar. - I had 4 Vantec Stealth 80mm "quiet" fans (2 intake, 1 exhaust, 1 blowhole exhaust). For good measure, I removed the blowhole. I also removed all the fan grills after hearing those could actually contribute to noise. - Also for good measure I put rubber washers on pretty much every screw in the case - fan, mobo, you name it. Sounds good on paper. I power up the computer, and lo and behold, it's no quieter than my old configuration. Which lead me to ponder the question - are aluminum cases naturally loud? Something to do with vibration perhaps? The only other thing I have left to test is to remove all the Vantec Stealths and see if they are the source of the noise - since these fans are really the only things left over from the old system.. Please help I didn't find the right solution from the internet. References: https://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=348464 Video content studio Thank you |
