PVC or polyvinyl chloride is a plastic which consists of 43% ethylene and 57% sodium chloride, better known as cooking salt. In order to make useful products from this basic mixture, additives are added to it. For smooth processing, for example, flow improvers are added and to improve light resistance, UV stabilizers.
Discovered by chance
The French physicist Henri Victor Regnault discovered PVC in 1838 purely by chance. His discovery then remained quiet for a long time. It was only in 1872 that German chemist Eugen Baumann succeeded in unravelling the secret of PVC production. At the beginning of the last century that produced concrete applications, but it was only after the Second World War that PVC grew to become the most popular of all plastics.
Nowadays, you come across PVC everywhere: in the automotive sector (e.g. dashboards, door panels), the food industry (as the ideal way of packing meat) and in the medical world (blood bags and catheters). Also in daily life you come across PVC every day – possibly unconsciously: your raincoat, your credit card, your kid’s inflatable beach toys, your shoes. They all contain PVC.
Most used plastic in construction
PVC is also the most used plastic in the building industry. In Western Europe, more than 65% of PVC produced has its final destination in this sector. The benefits are numerous: PVC is very light but at the same time strong, impact-resistant and resistant to wear, it is easy to work whereby the most complex designs are possible, it’s waterproof, resistant to chemicals, it is extremely durable owing to its high weather resistance and finally PVC may also be readily recycled. After the end of the already long service life (people sometimes speak of 100 years) the old PVC is reground into pellets, which form the basis for new PVC products.
One specific application of PVC is its use in window profiles. Of course PVC window profiles already exist, but this plastic, like polyamide and ABS may be used for strips that are placed in aluminium profiles to improve thermal insulation. Aluminium is not a good thermal insulator at all. The solution lies in positioning a thermal barrier between two aluminium extrusions. This thermal barrier consists of a strip of plastic that has excellent insulating properties. For example PVC. Because in addition to the benefits of PVC listed, combined with good acoustic insulation, this plastic also ensures that the temperature in your house stays pleasant throughout the year. And the fact that it means a decrease in your energy costs is something that consumers don’t mind at all!

In addition to wood and PVC, aluminium is by far the most widely used material for window profiles. The major downside to aluminium is its lower thermal insulation. The solution to this was found a few decades ago in the addition of a thermal barrier. This is a low thermal conductivity element that is inserted between the inside and outside of the aluminium profile. This insulation layer ensures a drastic reduction in the transmission of heat.
This insulating layer can take several forms, e.g. ABS, Noryl or PVC. A fourth possibility is polyamide (also known as PA). This is a high quality plastic that is manufactured from benzene in specialised factories. Polyamide shares a number of advantages with aluminium (wear resistance, 100% recyclable, etc.) but also adds some more.
The two aluminium extrusions are separated from each other by the polyamide strips. This allows the inside and outside of these types of profiles to have different colours. In addition, polyamide has a very good dimensional stability owing to its extremely small expansion coefficient. Polyamide is specifically resistant to very high and very low temperatures. The insertion of the strips therefore has no effect on the structural strength and durability of your window profiles. All this ensures that thermal break profiles offer almost unlimited possibilities in terms of aesthetics and design.
A last and even more important, additional advantage of polyamide is the excellent thermal insulation. While aluminium scores much less well than wood and PVC in that area, it performs at least as well in terms of Uf value thanks to the polyamide strips (which insulate 500x better than aluminium).
3-in-1 solution
The production of thermal break profiles is mostly done in three steps: ‘knurling’, ‘strip insertion’ and ‘crimping’. Each step is done with a separate machine. Aluro however, has a 3-in-1-solution. Thermal break profiles with polyamide strips are therefore a logical choice. They not only contribute to your living comfort, but also to your health (condensation and mould have no chance). Double row aluminium channel is intended for a permanent installation and does best installed into sheet rock as shown in the images above. Custom mounting clips are provided. You just have to see this channel to appreciate it. It actually creates a light fixture and can be used in ceilings or on walls or even along baseboards to provide LED accent lighting or perimeter lighting. Flexible LED strip is dimmable of course, so when you need extra high brightness at times and want to dim at other times, you can easily do that. You can also use RGB colour changing flexible LED strip to create motion or to change your colour scheme from time to time. This is the architectural grade aluminium channel. We all know that LED tape can be used by itself, as it can be stuck to almost any surface. There are however, some very good reasons why you should fit your led strip lights into aluminium profile.
1. CONSISTENT REFLECTION
When teamed up with a high output LED tape such as our 300 diode per meter single colour led strip light, a white diffuser gives a consistent dot free reflection.
This is particularly useful when lighting a highly reflective surface, such as tiles or worktops.
2. UNLEASH YOUR CREATIVITY
The large selection of profile styles allow you to achieve effects that can't be achieve with traditional light.
Profiles are completely adaptable - they can be as short or as long as the design requires.
3. LONGEVITY
Although LED generates little heat, a profile absorbs excess heat away from the diode.
Too much heat can end up damaging the LED and resulting in a significant reduction in total life expectancy.
TIP: SOME TIMBERS ARE PARTICULARLY BAD AT ABSORBING HEAT, MDF IS ONE MATERIAL THAT HAS A REPUTATION FOR BURNING THE LED STRIP IF IT ISNT FITTED TO A HEATSINK.
4. MAINTAIN THE LOOK
