Full Version: Why are aluminum rods not popular in street/strip engines?

Most alum rods are good for a finite amount of heat cycles you’ll hear anywhere from 100-200… it’s really just not practical, you can use em but most aren’t keen on changing rods that much
aluminum rods do not take the abuse of revving up and down all the time. Case in point why race cars shut the engine off after a run because the don’t like decell. People on drag week and Rocky Mountain do run them but replace them after. And you have to heat the engine up to operating temp before driving to warm the rod up. Just pain in the ass all around
Here is what I have found out from several big machine shops / engine builders on rods. Aluminum rods are good but are only good for so many heat cycles just like a steel rod but aluminum will fatigue faster. The story of them stretching is total bs they start to show small cracks in them under uv light
