The tools that ASI delivers – standards, assurance mechanisms, supply chain due diligence, chain of custody systems – are critical in helping stakeholders to identify and manage environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks.
For the aluminium sector the key ESG risks include:
Climate change, energy and GHG emissions;
Circularity, resource efficiency, material stewardship and recycling;
Biodiversity, ecosystem services and nature-positive solutions;
Human rights, including for Indigenous Peoples and labour.
As a multi-stakeholder organisation, and in addition to its significant producer and civil society membership, ASI engages with a wide range of downstream use sectors, addresses important supply chain risks and issues, and connects to broader (multi-material) responsible sourcing topics.
Aluminium product applications with the potential to contribute positively to global sustainability issues include:
Transport: Light weight, durable and recyclable solutions for growing electrified vehicle fleets and increasing transportation service demands;
Infrastructure: Long-life, recyclable, lightweight and modular applications to deliver net zero, energy-positive cities, buildings, power and data networks
Packaging: Protecting food and medicines through its unique barrier properties as well as reducing transportation weights
